Western Systems is a Finnish high technology software house established in 1981. Western Systems specializes in public transportation and smart card technology.
The public transportation system of the Helsinki region has adopted an electronic ticket system. It is based on a contactless smart card, which can carry money and transit fares. The ticket system in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area consists of Helsinki and three other cities. Public transportation in this area is composed of buses, streetcars, a subway, ferries, and local trains. The train system also includes two municipalities outside the Helsinki Metropolitan Area.
The system in Helsinki uses a travel card application WesternROUTE developed by Western Systems. Earlier versions of the system are in use in Turku, Finland, and Uppsala, Sweden.
